Were you thinking you would get the Tesla Cybertruck in vibrant red or a deep blue, or perhaps something even more exotic and eye-popping, like lime green or neon yellow? Elon Musk is here to set the record straight.
Tesla is not the in habit of releasing too much information on upcoming products, months in advance – and this definitely applies to the much-derided but still highly-anticipated Cybertruck. It was introduced to the world in November 2019, and the presentation model came with an unpainted bodywork using “ultra-hard 30X cold-rolled stainless-steel” that guaranteed “superior strength and endurance.”
As one of Musk’s most recent tweets indicates, that’s the same – and only – look buyers will be able to get when the Cybertruck becomes available to order, presumably later this year. In other words, Tesla won’t be offering a color palette for the Cybertruck.
On April 15, Musk was again on Twitter, saying that the Berlin Gigafactory, now under construction, would have “the world’s most advanced paint shop, with more layers of stunning colors that subtly change the curvature.” Existing Gigafactories would be retrofitted as well, but the process would probably take longer to be completed.
This is when one user asked him if the Cybertruck would come in various colors, to which Musk replied: “You will be able to wrap it in any color or pattern.” This could either mean that Tesla will be offering custom wrap jobs for the Cybertruck, which is unlikely, or that it will only come in steel gray.
If you think about it, the choice of delivering the Cybertruck with an unpainted body of stainless steel makes sense. In an older interview, Musk said he came up with the idea for the electric truck after realizing that only a tank is tougher and better than a pickup, so he set out to deliver a road-worthy one. Pink or lime green tanks may be fun to look at, but who really wants to be seen driving in them?
