A while back we told you that BMW Japan plans to sell cars online via Amazon. Back then it was only about the i3 but this time, it seems like plans have changed and the big daddy i8 is now available on the famous merchandising website.
Not only that but the ad also specifies that you get free shipping for your order. It’s like they’re selling a book or a PC component and not a high-tech plug-in hybrid sports car.

The price tag is set at JPY20,000,000 which is roughly $161,000 at today’s exchange rates. Add in some paperwork and a down payment and the grand total rises to JPY20,695,160 which is roughly $168,000. Sure, that’s about $30,000 more than what the US dealers are asking for a base i8 but knowing how expensive luxury cars usually are in Japan, we’re surprised it’s not even more.

The car is brand new and comes with everything you would expect. Leaving the options aside, you get a sports car with incredible performance that doesn’t cut a hole in the ozone layer.

Up front there’s an electric motor delivering 131 HP and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque while round the back we have an 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbocharged mill making 231 HP and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque. Together, they deliver 362 HP and 570 Nm (420 lb-ft) of torque for incredible performance.

0-62 is done in 4.4 seconds thanks to all-wheel drive and the 6-speed automatic transmission while the top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) is reached effortlessly. The best bit is that you emit just 49 grams of CO2 into the atmosphere per kilometer and the car is able to sip just 2.1 l/100 km (120 mpg) or even run in EV mode altogether.
