Having more money than sense is a real thing, and this unidentified driver making the news today is a good example of that.
He’s being turned into an example by the Stechford Police after his reportedly new Lamborghini Aventador was impounded for driving it on public roads without insurance. In the UK, driving without insurance is a big deal and can lead to the car being impounded and, within 14 days, sent to the crusher if you fail to provide documentation, pay the fine and associated storage fees.

This happened in Stechford, near Birmingham, Stechford Response says on Twitter. “Note to anyone who wants to buy a Lamborghini Aventador. Please remember to make sure it is insured for you to drive. Seized today by Stechford Response for no insurance,” reads the tweet accompanying a photo of the $350,000 car.

Reactions to the post are indicative of what usually happens when cops seize a car for lacking insurance and the driver doesn’t pick it up within the 2-week timeframe: it’s sent to the crusher. A similar story made headlines last week, when Benjamin Mendy, professional football player for Manchester City and the French national team, was reportedly panicking because the cops were about to crush his Lamborghini Aventador SVJ after having seized it in late November.

According to reports in the local media, Mendy was pulled over for driving without insurance AND a valid driver’s license and, despite more than 20 days having passed, he was still unable to provide documentation for the car. In his case, it wasn’t exactly a new purchase, since he’d been seen driving it in Cannes in the summer of 2019.

Birmingham Mail notes that insuring a car like a Lamborghini costs over £7,000 (approximately $9,270 at today’s exchange rate) a year, and that drivers under 25 are facing an “uphill struggle to insure the car at all.” But everything is possible if you have enough money and the willingness to spend it – two things that this driver clearly lacked.
