Remember when supercars packs 400 horsepower (think: the Ferrari 360 Modena of the early 2000s)? One year after that Prancing Horse went out of production, the E60 BMW M5 stunned everybody with a ton of parameters the driver could customise before setting off. Oh, and there was also a time when racing-derived engine hardware was reserved for hypercars. Well, you can forget about the past, as the future is here - the 2020 Mercedes-AMG A45 packs all of the above and more.
We've already talked about the official, over-the-web release of the hot hatch and we are now back on the topic to feast our eyes on a yellow example greeting afficioandos at the Goodwood Festival of Speed - make sure to use the swipe feature of the social media post below for the complete eye candy.

The Drift Mode is just the tip of the iceberg, with other six modes being available. Then we have the chassis assistance settings: the 387 hp and 480 Nm "base version comes with Basic and Advanced, while the 421 hp and 500 Nm S model offers Pro and Master, with all these basically being various ways of asking the electronic nannies to take five.

The roller bearings of the turbo compressor wheel and shafts used to be something Mercedes-AMG GT63 buyers could brag about, but now the tech is part of what makes the new two-liter turbo of this hatch so wonderful, together with goodies such as intelligent thermal management (think: two water pumps).

The pricing of the range-topping fourth-generation A-Class hasn't been released yet, but an optioned S model should demand the same money as a base Toyota Supra, so be prepared to spend around 50 grand on the thing.

Of course, with the kind of tech and price, the second-generation A45 stretches the concept of a hot hatch to the point where this seems more like an advanced sportscars in compact vehicle attire, so I we'll have to wait and see what the real-world impact of the machine is.
