You'll pardon our German, but we just couldn't pass up the opportunity to talk about the amazing Yaris Hybrid, a car that really brings hybrid fuel savings to the mass market via a supermini body.
Unlike the Prius, the Yaris Hybrid is not a bespoke hybrid and uses an existing platform. However, that doesn't stop it from being amazing. Autobild tested six superminis that promise to save you money on fuel and guess who came on top?
We have the VW Polo with cylinder deactivation, the Honda Jazz Hybrid, a diesel Hyundai i20 and a thee-cylinder Peugeot 208. Not surprisingly, most of the cars weren't able to produce the claimed numbers. Among the big disappointments were the Peugeot 208 VTi 82, which only managed 5.5 l/100km because of its lack-luster three-cylinder engine. The Jazz Hybrid also seemed like a letdown, binge drinking 5.7 liters of fuel during the 100 km test. At almost €22,000 as tested, it's also way too expensive.
The Polo BlueGT is more of a hot hatch with 140 PS coming from its 1.4-liter TSI engine. It's reasonably efficient for what it is, but not a clean car. Skoda's Fabia 1.2 TDI Greenline manages to impress in Autobild, but there can only really be one winner, the Yaris Hybrid.
It's only a few hundred Euros more expensive than the less powerful Yaris and is much more efficient.
