Yamaha YZF-R125 - UK’s Best Seller

For the second month running, a 125cc bike is the best selling motorcycle in the UK. And not just any 125cc, but the Yamaha YZF-R125, the single cylinder bike that features MotoGP inspired technology.

The small sister of the much awarded R1 and R6, the YZF-R125 was the choice of 198 riders last month, making Yamaha also the best selling motorcycle brand in UK. Following the little sports machine was another Japanese, namely the Honda CBF125 with 162 sales, MCN reported.

While Yamaha celebrates its leading position in the UK sales, the overall results are not that encouraging for the British bike sales market. According to MCI via MCN, registrations were down by 28 percent in August 2009, compared to August 2008. The biggest slumps were seen in the supersport and scooter categories, with both falling by more than 34 percent.

The Japanese manufacturer launched the YZF-R125 in 2008, featuring a liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine running in full-sized Deltabox chassis, aiming for younger and less experienced buyers. One of the most significant features of the new R125 is that it has been constructed with a full-sized chassis, which is unique in its segment.

The bike retails for about £2999 on the road, which is with £400 more than the CBR125R, but that doesn’t seem to be a problem for the 17-year-old beginners who seem to be willing to pay for a more aggressive look. However, the recently revealed project from Suzuki might just catch up to it, as the GSXR-125 is preparing for market launch next year.

Yamaha recently revealed its 2010 revisions for the YZF-R1 and YZF-R6, with a new paint scheme and a Limited Edition (LE) model for the first, and slightly changes in design and power upgrade for the latter.
