Yamaha XSR900 Souped Up with New Akrapovic Exhausts

Exhaust system manufacturer extraordinaire Akrapovic showcases two new add-ons for the Yamaha XSR900 naked roadster. One of these silencers is homologated for street use and falls within the limits of the Euro 4 emissions regulations, while the other doesn't, so using it on public roads is an iffier matter.

The Akrapovic Racing Line Titanium exhaust system is the one customers can install on their Yamaha XSR900 machines and ride anywhere, every day. The silencer is made from Akrapovic's proven top-grade titanium and comes with a nifty two-tone design.

The sleeve is painted black with a white Akrapovic logo and makes a neat contrast with the polished bare metal sheen of the collectors and the end cap. The photos Akrapovic sent us also show that the can is relocated from the low-swung position of the stock exhaust to a much higher place near the saddle.

Also, the passenger is protected by two perforated metal heat shields, but we can't determine whether they are part of the package or not. Either way, the Akrapovic Racing Line Titanium exhaust will shave 1.2 kg (2.6 lb) off the Yamaha XSR900, while adding 4.1 horsepower at 5150 rpm and 5.4 Nm (4 lb-ft) at 5200 revs per minute.

On the other hand, the Racing Line Carbon system has titanium collectors and the carbon fiber used to manufacture the silencer helps save even more weight. This non-street homologated system is 3.8 kg (8.4 lb) lighter than the stock one and provides a 6.9 hp boost of power at 9850 rpm. The maximum torque increase is 6.4 Nm (4.7 lb-ft) at 5150 rpm and the static noise level at 5000 increases by 8.5 dB to reach 102.5 dB.

Both exhaust systems are easy to install at home and don't require specialized tools of a high level of mechanical skills. Check with your Akrapovic or Yamaha dealer for availability and prices.
