It looks like Yamaha has made an early move at the beginning of 2014, with the trademark registration filed in Europe and the US for 4 new bike codenames. That is, it appears like Yamaha is planning a move in the superbike segment, with two new liter-class machines based on the all-time favorite and flagship R1 beast.
We’re dealing with 4 names because Yamaha has different models for the US and the non-Us markets. Sold as the R1 in the United States, the superbike is called YZF-R1 in Europe, hence the multiple names. All in all, Yamaha has registered the R1S and R1M names with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, while the European correspondents are obviously YZF-R1S and YZF-R1M.

There’s no word on which upgrades are the Yamaha engineers planning for the successful R1 model, and we can only hope that the R1M will bring some more MotoGP-derived DNA the street level. Honda has made the first move in this direction with the CBR1000RR SP machine, so we can expect that Yamaha fills this niche, too.

Some whispers in the industry also bring in rumors of a hefty aesthetic overhaul of the R1 family, and something tells me that we’re in for a lot of good news (and bikes) this November at the EICMA.
