Yamaha to Develop Leaning Multi-Wheel Sports Quad

An awesome piece of news transpired between the lines during an annual report presented by Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. CEO Hiroyuki Yanagi, and it relates to the possibility that a leaning multi-wheel sports ROV might arrive soon enough from Iwata.

In that report, Mr. Yanagi added specifically that Yamaha has serious plans to develop a quad that integrates leaning technology similar to that found in the Tricity scooter (read our Tricity ride review here).

Under the new MTP (Medium-Term Management Plan), we will pursue the growing world of personal mobility by continuing the development of products in the ‘third-vehicle category’ which incorporate our leaning multi-wheel (LMW) technology used in the TRICITY line announced in 2014, to fully achieve a pure sports ROV,” Yanagi declared.

No other mention was made in relation to this new class of vehicles, so until official info surfaces, we're playing the guessing game. Needless to say, the highest hope for the new leaning SxS is that it will be derived from the awesome YXZ1000R machine.

Thinking about such an undertaking, things appear much easier to accomplish than we suspected in the first place. That is because Yamaha already has a lot of the know-how and technologies that are required to come up with a leaning UTV.

The four-wheeler platform is already here, and it is a great one, engineered for speed and high performance. Chassis and engine design already went a long way, and the LMW quad looks more like a twist of the existing vehicle design than an entirely new, untrodden path.

Likewise, when it comes to designing vehicles that have multiple leaning wheels, the Tricity and the soon-to-become-a-production machine MWT-9 are a great starting point, if not already halfway there.

According to a chart published by Yamaha, no less than six new SxS models are expected in the future, so maybe even cooled designs are heading our way. And in case you're wondering what such alternative vehicle designs could do for you, here's a taste of pure awesomeness, from the spectacular Swincar.
