Yamaha Sales Down 12.8% in 2012

We did not expect to see Yamaha not joining the rest of the happy "big boys" in the motorcycle industry in their reports on the 2012 sales figures. All in all, the Yamaha unit sales in 2012 dropped a hefty 12.8%, while the revenues decreased 5.4% over the 2011 figures.

One of the saddest figures for Yamaha is the net income decrease, down a massive 72.2 percent in 2012. Emerging markets such as Brazil, Indonesia and Vietnam, together with the European Union markets saw the leading decrease. Out of the merging markets, India and Thailand were the only major ones to go against the grain, and recorded increased sales.

Yamaha's biggest growth in 2012 was recorded in the US, where more than 71,000 bikes were sold, a 9.8% increase over the 64,000 sold throughout 2011. However, this growth was too insignificant to have a major impact on the overall figures.

Now, with Yamaha not selling 125cc bikes in countries such as Canada, to allure the new generations of riders, it's rather hard to believe they'd go for the tuning fork machines after riding and getting used to a Honda CBR125 for two years.

At the same time, Yamaha has also postponed their new small-to-middleweight motorcycle until 2014, and by this time, pretty much all the rest of the manufacturers will have their solid foothold in the segment... even those who have never considered a 200cc bike until lately, like Triumph.
