Xiaomi-Backed Chinese Maker Xpeng Lands SUV in Norway, the EV Gateway to Europe

It’s just one of a myriad of emerging electric vehicle manufacturers China has to show for on the way to sustainable mobility. But Xpeng is a little different, as it models its strategy on lessons learned the hard way from Tesla. The company has already established a firm foothold in Silicon Valley and is now focusing on its European expansion.

With multiple backing – including from smartphone expert Xiaomi – Xpeng has already revealed two electric vehicles. First was the G3 electric SUV, revealed back in 2018 with a very quirky styling and a rotating, 360-degree selfie camera on the roof!

Next came the P7 “super-long range sports sedan,” which even had time to morph into a limited-edition P7 Wing at the 2020 Auto Guangzhou show. With a “smart EV” SUV and a “new flagship limited edition” equipped with scissor-style front doors, it’s clear how Xpeng is looking to shape its future.

Sure, it’s going to take a lot of time and effort to start competing with Tesla on a truly global scale, but the company has just made the first step in that direction. That’s because Xpeng has just delivered the first G3 units in European configuration, all sold on the Norwegian market. This represents their first foray into the Old Continent.

Naturally, there are even higher ambitions, with the Chinese automaker mentioning “plans for other markets in development.” For now, the G3 is looking to shore up its social media presence, as the brand also landed a special feature (video embedded below) on the fullychargedshow channel on YouTube for the occasion.

For now, there are just 100 G3 units going to customers in Norway – across 28 locations, including the town of “Bodø (67° N), just north of the Arctic Circle.” The electric SUV costs at least 358,000 NKr in Norway – which is around €33,700 euros or $41k, according to the company.

For the money, the Chinese are promising the compact SUV will be capable of covering up to 451 km (280 miles) on the WLTP cycle on a full charge of the battery pack. The company also hints that it’s ready to bring the P7 over to Europe as well, promising a window of opportunity will be found in the next 12 months.
