American manufacturer GM, together with its Chinese partner SAIC, announced today the market entrance of the Wuling Hong Guang, a vehicle which is being advertised as the first compact business vehicle in China.
The MPV will be offered for prices starting at RMB44,800 ($6,600) and will go to as much as RMB60,800 ($9,000). It will come equipped with two P-TEC engines, a 1.2l one (70 hp) and the other a 1.4l unit (100 hp). Fuel economy is rated at 7.4l/100 kilometers (31 mpg) for the more powerful unit.
The Hong Guang comes equipped with anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, dual-safety airbags, a pullback seatbelt, a LED high-position stoplight, backing radar, rear window defrost, a rear rain wiper, central door children’s locks, automatic locking, and a remote key with an electronic anti-theft system along with the automatic car tracking function.
Visually, the MPV stands out thanks to its dimensions: a length of 4,305 mm, width of 1,680 mm and height of 1,780 mm. Sitting on a wheelbase of 2,720 mm, it can accommodate up to eight passengers.
“The Hong Guang addresses the growing need for a small, economical vehicle for business use and family travel,” said Kevin Wale, president and managing director of the GM China Group.
The model will only be available, according to the SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) joint venture, at selected dealers. The carmakers did not release any sales targets for the model, nor did they provide any information regarding the production numbers for it. The JV has become last year the first automaker in China to sell more than 1 million vehicles in a 12-month period.
