One of the latest products the guys over at Hammacher Schlemmer uploaded on their website is a solar-powered velomobile, with a range bi enough to take to work and back with only one charge. The 100% emission free vehicle travels up to 20 mph (32 km/h) when propelled by just the motor or up to 30 mph (48 km/h) in pedal-assist mode and the best part is you don't pay anything for gas.
How much money would you spend to keep nature clean? That is probably the question to ask looking at this strange vehicle. Built by Organic Transit, a Durham, North Carolina-based company founded by entrepreneur Rob Cotter, the project was originally put on Kickstarter.

A solar panel built-into the roof powers the 600-watt electric motor and thanks to a continuously variable transmission that allows smooth, natural pedaling synchronized with the motor, the velomobile is able to reach up to 30 mph in pedal-assist mode. It’s aircraft-grade aluminum frame, stainless steel hardware and durable carbon fiber body withstand exposure to rain and sun. Elf's LED headlights, brake lights, and turn signals provide clear alerts to other cyclists and automobiles while navigating street or bike trails.

Motor charges in 7 hours via sunlight or 2 and 1/2 hours via the included AC power adapter and the vehicle is designed to carry up to 350 lbs (158 kg) of payload. And what it’s even better, Elf is legally classified as a bicycle, which means it does not require a license to drive it.

As to its price, well it might cost the same as a second hand car, but imagine how much money you save for not buying any gas at all every month. And it could also be used as a good work out every time you feel like doing some exercise. Who knows, maybe we're looking at the future's next metropolis transport.
