Your back hurts bad enough for you to want something else for your kids. You don’t need them to spend countless hours sitting in a chair at the office when it comes to learning. Building things with their own hands and then using those things outside, that’s how kids these days should discover basic engineering, alternative energy sources, and even aviation.
Volta Flyer is a start-up project that uses a patented system - solar-powered DIY learning kits. Two years ago, they launched a similar project that would see model cars racing each other using solar power. Kids would learn while building the track along with the cars themselves. At the end, they’d also drive the cars.
It’s in this same vein ToyLabs is now developing a new kit that uses advanced solar technologies and ultralight materials to achieve flight powered by the Sun. It’s a science project kit for kids.
The Volta Flyer prides itself on being the world’s first DIY airplane kit that is solely powered by the sun. It contains all of the prefabricated parts and components necessary to build your very own solar airplane. It takes about 20 minutes to assemble it without using special tools or glues. While using their hands to establish a functional aircraft, kids will learn about basic mechanical engineering, aeronautics, electronics, and renewable energy.
As long as the sun is shining bright, the small airscrew in the back will kip spinning, and the craft will go on flying. The Volta Flyer ships with a unique thin-film flexible amorphous silicon solar panel, a fuselage with wing receiver and embedded electronics, two sets of wings and vertical stabilizers, a set of wing joiners, and a set of cool decals to customize the small airplane.
Using the craft is a three-step move: charge it up by pointing the solar panel towards the sun for 90 seconds, flip a button to give an extra energy boost to initiate propulsion, and hand-lunch it into the air. A $40 pledge will grant you a Volta Flyer Solar Airplane kit if the project passes its Kickstarter campaign and reaches production.
