American Science and Engineering (AS&E) has recently unveiled the Mini Z, the world’s first handheld Z Backscatter imaging scanner for fast, portable and real-time detection. Designed especially for law enforcement, the device is able to scan effectively “on the go” in the hardest-to-reach environments.
The device could become drug dealers’ nightmare considering there will be no spot where Mini Z couldn’t reach. It was designed for fast and portable detection of hidden organic threats, such as drugs, contraband, plastic guns, ceramic knives and explosives. Even though it’s mainly created for border control, event security, maritime police and general aviation security, it might also be used for VIP’s security.

Chuck Dougherty, AS&E’s President and CEO, reported the Mini Z is the initial offering of what will be a family of portable backscatter products. “We have taken the technology behind the success of the ZBV system and miniaturized it - making it more affordable and accessible to a broader range of customers”.

AS&E engineers expect Mini Z system to be a real game-changer for law enforcement and border security officials who are constantly challenged to quickly and accurately detect potential threats in hard-to-reach environments as they work to ensure the highest level of public safety.

As to the safety of the person wearing it, the Mini Z uses just 10 watts of power, and cannot penetrate deeply into human tissue. The device is self contained and battery powered, with the results transmitted wirelessly to a PC or laptop computer for viewing. However, even though the Mini Z is a low-energy and low-dose Z Backscatter system, it is not designed to scan people.
