Leon Haslam’s and Jonathan Rea’s sons Max and Jake, respectively are the first two riders to test the new-spec Honda CBR1000RR SP machinery. Pata Honda is thus looking forward to put a new medical theory to the test: that which says the sons of successful World Superbike riders are inheriting the specific genes to transform them into early road racing stars.
The gene has already been baptized as the “speed gene” and researchers are also making efforts to determine whether it is also being passed from fathers to daughters. In case the research program turns sufficient evidence for the Speed Gene being passed to the riders’ offspring, we might be looking at a new future in road racing, with expansion potential to other classes, such as Supersport, Motocross and most important, MotoGP.
Pata Honda is currently developing a specialized kit which will be installed on the Honda CBR1000RR SP machines, and which will allow the young racers to benefit from enhanced, age-specific ergonomics. There is no word on whether these kits will only be used as a track-specific add-on to the CBR1000RR motorcycles, or Honda will decide to make them available for a wider customer pool.
Either way, two things are almost certain. First of all, the young would-be racers do have a tremendous weight advantage, given the fact they’re both less than one year-old. Secondly, you definitely need another cup of coffee in case you’re still puzzled with all the things above.
