World's Only Street-Legal Porsche 911 GT1 Evolution Headed for Auction

When international sportscar racing was brought back to life in the mid-90s, Porsche decided to skip the scheme that saw supercars like the McLaren F1 or Ferrari F40 going through a motorsport overhaul and come up with something that was designed as a racecar from the very beginning.

This is how the GT1 incarnation of the Porsche 911 (the Neunelfer was in its 996 generation at the time) was born. And since FIA rules required a street incarnation for homologation, the GT1 Straßenversion (street version) was born, with a mere 25 units being built.

However, when it comes to the 911 GT1 Evo racecar that followed, the world holds only one (known) street-legal incarnation, and if your bank account allows it, this could end up adorning your driveway.

Imagine this as the Porsche that sits in between the 959 and the Carrera GT, tipping the scales somewhere around 2,425 lbs (1,100 kg) and delivering up to 600 hp.

This machine was born as one of the only 14 GT1 Evos made, wearing the GT1 993-117 chassis number. The sheer idea of being able to drive a car that has 31 race starts and 12 wins in its trophy cabinet is enough to have our undivided attention.

As the auction house explains, we might be dealing with "the only ex-race car with road registration in existence." And while we can't be 100 percent certain when it comes to some eccentric driving a street-converted racecar away from public attention, the aura of this Porsche remains uber-strong.

This 1997 road-going 911 GT1 Evo is set to go under the hammer at RM Sotheby's Monaco event. The auction will be held at Le Sporting Monte-Carlo, on May 12, giving you just enough time to clear a spot in your garage. Providing you have the financial possibilities to cover the estimated price, which sits between €2.7 and €3 million (just under $3 million to $3.3 million).
