The LCI X3 was just revealed and I have to admit, it will take me some time to get used to its new front fascia. I’m not saying it’s ugly, I’m just saying it’s different.
However, moving away from the design that will forever be a matter of taste, when the X3 is bringing under the bonnet is just as new and revolutionary.
Struggling to keep up with the ever stringent CO2 regulations, the Munich-based company unveiled 2 new engines alongside the refreshed SUV, both of them diesel and both falling under the EU6 standard.
The sDrive18d model will be fitted with a new 2-liter diesel engine making 150 HP and 360 Nm (265 lb-ft) of torque that will be available only with rear-wheel-drive. In this configuration, it was rated by BMW at 5 l/100 km (47 mpg) for the manual gearbox and 5.1 l/100 km (46.1 mpg) for the automatic. The 0-62 mph sprint is done in 9.5 seconds for the manual and 9.8 seconds for the 8-speed.
The other new model will be the xDrive20d, fitted with a new 2-liter turbocharged diesel engine making 190 HP and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque, another world premiere.
Rated at 5.2 l/100 km (45.2 mpg) with the automatic gearbox and 5.4 l/100 km (43.5 mpg) with the manual 6-speed unit, the new X3 will do 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 8.1 seconds with either transmission. Only all-wheel-drive versions will be available.
The other models that will be available as LCI versions from the get-go are the xDrive30d, xDrive35d, sDrive20i, xDrive20i, xDrive28i and the xDrive35i that show no drastic improvements over their predecessors.
