It coming at us dressed in Mineral Grey Metallic and with the top down as it should always be to allow you to enjoy the warm weather and breeze going through your hair. That’s why it was made in the first place and that’s what you're going to get.

Being a combination between the new 4 Series Convertible and the M4 Coupe, the new F83 M4 was unveiled today featuring the best of both worlds. From the former it got the neck warmers and the folding roof while the latter provided the chassis, engine and transmission, some of the most highly anticipated in the business.

The engine is the same S55 unit from the F80 M3 and makes 431 HP and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque out of 3 liters of displacement split between 6 cylinders place one behind the other. To achieve such numbers, two turbochargers were installed alongside new intercoolers and a lot of new tech meant to save weight.

The driveshaft is made of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer and so is the boot while the dash is being held up by a magnesium skeleton to save more weight.

Of course, since the convertible weighs 1,750 kg (3,858 lbs), 253 kg (557.7 lbs) more than its Coupe brother, the performance figures have dropped too, a bit more than we expected. The 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint is done in 4.6 seconds with the manual 6-speed gearbox that comes as standard, while the 7-speed DCT unit does the same sprint in 4.4 seconds 0.3 seconds more than the Coupe in both cases.

Fuel consumption figures differ too, as the new model takes up 8.7 l/100 km (27 mpg) for each 100 kilometers on a combined cycle when fitted with the automatic box, 0.4 liters more (1.2 miles less). When combined with the manual gearbox, that number will go up to 9.1 l/100 km (25.8 mpg), 0.3 liters more (0.9 miles less) than for the Coupe. CO2 emissions are marginally higher though.

Of course, all the optional features you can get on the M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe are also available here, including the Individual program, while the Active M differential, new Electric Power Steering and M compound brakes come as standard.

The load capacity of the boot is ok for a convertible, rated at 220 liters (7.76 cu. ft.) with the roof down and 370 liters (13 cu. ft.) with it up. Speaking of which, you’ll be happy to learn that you can fold the roof at speeds up to 18 km/h (11 mph) and the entire process takes just 20 seconds.

Inside the car, a new ‘noise-absorbing’ headliner promises to drive the wind noise down by 2 dB compared to the retired E93 M3 model while new technologies provide the best and safest experience possible thanks to features like Driving Assistant Plus, Head-Up Display and the Navigation System Professional.

Prices haven’t been announced yet but we did learn that the M4 Convertible will be seen for the first time in the flesh at the New York Auto Show later on this month.
