You might have heard about the famous World of Tanks online game. It turns out they recently organized this contest where they asked fans to create the best sculpture of a tank made of snow. This is what Alexander Zhuikov, a student from Novosibirsk, Russia managed to come up with and we have to admit it’s quite impressive.
Sure, in Russia there was quite a fuss over this peculiar structure, but since we don’t read cyrillic that good, we had to dig a little deeper to see what exactly are we looking at. It turns out the tank was a month’s work and involved the 20-year old student getting some proper help from a couple of his friends.

He first got some tank drawings from the almighty world wide internet, then asked his grandmother for some spare space in the woman’s backyard and grabbed some shovels. About 20 tonnes of snow were moved to one place. Simple tools such as spades, knives and trowels were used to turn the huge pile of frozen water into a true work of war. He even built a shield meant to protect it from melting under the sun.

A student at the Siberian State University of telecommunications and Informatics, Alexander has always been quite passionate about military machines of such, so choosing the right model was not that hard. He decided on a life-size model of the Soviet war machine SU-122-54 and did quite a good job, since the vehicle even has a self-propelled cabin that can be accessed through a hatch.

In case you were wondering, the development of the real life tank destroyer started in 1948 and the vehicle entered service 9 years later. Mass production was launched in 1955, with a total of 100 units ever manufactured.

Now, get this, the green iceed-machine is in fact the second tank made of snow Alexander created, the first being a different model also designed for a similar contest. The only thing we’re wondering now is whether or not they hold these sort of contests in the US too. Alaska or Canada would most likely be a place to start off, but maybe you know more about this issue.
