Just as promised, BMW brought its latest guns to the Geneva Motor Show 2014. Apart from the world debut of the 2 Series Active Tourer and the LCI X3, one of the most interesting cars that also made an appearance at the Bavarian stand was the 4 Series Gran Coupe.
Introduced earlier this year, the 4-door Coupe version of the 2-door Coupe derived from the 4-door Sedan 3 Series (quite tricky, right?) took everyone by surprise.

It’s not that we didn’t expect this car to show up. After all we have the 6 Series Gran Coupe precedent ahead of us but things happened all too quickly, as the 4 Series was launched just last summer.

Compared to the classic 3er, the 4 Series Gran Coupe has a lower center of gravity, wider track and a sloping roof line, to keep true to the coupe concept as much as possible. The length and width of the car are actually exactly the same as on the 2-door version while at the back a tailgate showed up, even though rumors claimed that the new car will have a traditional boot.

Since the chassis is exactly the same as on its less practical brother, the handling is expected to be almost the same, even though the Gran Coupe is a bit heavier, but not by much (on average around 60 kg/132 lbs). That means we’ll be seeing quite an agile car down the road with the added practicality of 5 doors (tailgate included).

The car that was introduced at the Motor Show is wearing the classy Sapphire Black and wears a license plate that says ‘BMW 435i Gran Coupe’ which means its fitted with a 3-liter 6-cylinder turbocharged engine that makes 306 HP and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque and is, incidentally, the top of the range model right about now. It’s also an M Sport model which means it’s fitted with the M Sport body kit on the outside, has M Sport brakes and M Sport suspension.

Since we’re talking about the models this car will have, we should mention that the US will only be getting the 428i, 428i xDrive and 435i models at first, prices starting at $41,225. The trim lines that will be available on North American ground include Sport, M Sport and Luxury while in Europe customers also have the choice of going with Modern Line. Fortunately, no matter where you live you can always opt for the Individual optionals that are available worldwide.

Sales of the new Gran Coupe will start this summer and Europe will also get to choose out of 3 diesel alternatives, the 418d, 420d and 420d xDrive variants.

Update: We've added a couple more photos from the venue, including en-detail shots of a couple of distinctive traits of the new 4 Series Gran Coupe like the 'GranCoupe' badge on the rear windows.
