Workers on Strike at the Maserati Factory

Fiat’s decision to rearrange production in order to get profitable again in 2010 seems to have made workers fear for their jobs. According to just-auto.com, the workers at the Maserati plant located in Modena, northern Italy, went on strike on Tuesday.

The official reason for the strike is the brand’s management refusal to answer questions related to the possible move of the Maserati production to the Bertone factory in Turin. Giordano Fiorani, regional secretary of the Fiom union, told AFP that all 700 workers walked out of the Modena factory, Maserati’s only production center.

"There have been press reports in recent days of a transfer of Maserati production to the Bertone factory in Turin," said Giordano Fiorani. "We have asked the management to refute (the reports), but we have not had an answer. We have a meeting planned for 16 February and I hope we will have some reassurances then."

Maserati’s management refused to comment on the accusations, but it’s a known fact that last year Fiat bought the Bertone plant.

This is not the first time Fiat had to deal with strikes. Sergio Marchionne’s recent decision to shut down production at Fiat’s Termini Imerese factory in Sicily had serious repercussions, as the unions launched strikes in Fiat plants across the country. Despite the protests. the automaker has serious arguments for closing the plant in Sicily and moving the Lancia Ypsilon production to Poland. According to the company, no less than 1,000 Euros are lost per car.
