Women Spend More on Their Bikes Compared to Men

If you have the feeling that there are more women riding bikes these days than there used to, you’re not wrong. The number of female bikers has almost doubled when compared to ten years ago.
At least that’s what the 2018 Motorcycle / ATV Owner Survey conducted by the California-based Motorcycle Industry Council claims. And this is only the beginning, as their number is about to get even higher in the years ahead.

According to the poll, which took into account the responses of 2,472 American adults, in 2018 about one in five motorcycle owners is female. Translated into percentages, that means about 20 percent of American riders among all age groups.

Among younger generations, meaning Gen X (born from the early-to-mid 1960s to the early 1980s) and Millenials (the early 1980s as starting birth years and the mid-1990s), that percentage is even higher, standing at 22 percent for the former and 26 percent of the latter.

And all mind their bikes with greater care than men. The survey showed women spend on average $574 a year on tires, routine repairs, maintenance, replacement parts and so on. Compare that with the average $497 spent by men.

The aftermarket industry benefits greatly of this development, as women are also spending tons of cash on accessories and apparel.

The Motorcycle Industry Council predicts that soon the overall percentage of female riders will reach 25 percent, fueled by the coming of age of more open-minded generations.

“We’ve seen with our own eyes many more women riders — on the roads, on the trails, on the track, with families, at motorcycling events, forming clubs and just being part of everyday group rides,” said in a statement Andria Yu, the organization’s director of communications.

“Many people in the industry have worked some 30 years to achieve this, and now the data confirms it: More and more women are getting out there and enjoying motorcycles.”
