Here’s a thought for all would-be car thieves: if you’re going for an electric vehicle, make sure you don’t steal it when it’s charging or if you don’t know if it has enough battery to get you where you want to be.
One woman from Payson, Arizona, stole a Tesla Model S from the parking lot of a shopping center and was apprehended by the police a short distance away, when the car ran out of power. Granted, this can also happen if you steal a gasoline car, but the difference is that you can find a gas station faster than you can a charging station.
The irony is that there was one such charging station at the shopping center, Payson Roundup reports. This could mean that either the woman stole the Tesla while it was charging, or she got really, really unlucky. Either way, this was a joyride she’s not likely to forget soon.
“Spike strips were ineffective (but the) vehicle ran out of electricity on East Highway 260,” Police Chief Ron Tischer says for the media outlet. “The suspect refused to exit the car and troopers and deputies were forced break a window to get the suspect out.”
Kathy Sain has priors and is a familiar face to the police, because of past drug activity calls. For her latest stunt, she will probably have the book thrown at her, especially considering the charges she just added to her already expansive resume: “theft, fleeing pursuing law enforcement vehicles, criminal damage, aggravated driving under the influence, failure to appear in the first degree for a warrant and failing to appear in the second degree for a warrant.”
The report doesn’t mention the damage done to the stolen Tesla, but seeing how spike strips were ineffectively deployed, the owner is looking at least at a couple of busted tires.
