This could be a misogynistic joke, but it was an actual ordeal to live through for one New Jersey (female) driver: as she was pulling out of a car wash, she mistook the gas pedal for the brake and ended up in the river.
To boot, she’d just gotten her Mercedes-Benz washed, so that was money down the (almost literal) drain.
It happened in Hackensack, N.J., after Evelyn Asperilla drove through the car wash for a full service. Her daughter was also in the car but she’s just studying for her driver’s license, so her mother was at the wheel.
As the car was pulling out, Asperilla accidentally hit gas and the car rushed forward, almost hitting staff, and plunged into the water, nose first. As the video surveillance shared on Facebook by Hackensack FD and available below shows, staff rushed to the car and got the women out as soon as possible.
Neither was hurt, but Asperilla was taken to the hospital as a precaution. The car was removed from the water shortly after with help from a crane and though it sustained considerable damage, the report doesn’t mention it being rendered completely undrivable.
According to the FD, Asperilla was at fault for what happened, because she mistook one pedal for the other. However, she’s telling a slightly different story to NBC 4 New York, claiming the SUV inexplicably sped forward and she chose to drive it into the river because she didn’t want to hit the staff standing by. Beats admitting you made the most rookie mistake a driver can make, right?
Asperilla also says she was panicked because she can’t swim and she feared she’d drown, but that she’s glad neither she nor her daughter were hurt in any way. As for the damage to the car, she doesn’t seem too worried about it.
