Woman Gives Birth While Driving

A few days ago, we brought you the results of a driving habits study conducted by GN Netcom, a wireless headset manufacturer. The study showed people have all kind of more or less strange habits behind the wheel, with most of them posing a mortal threat not only to those doing them, but to other motorists as well.
The 29 percent who said they kiss while driving or the 5 percent who say they play video games while behind the wheel of a moving car are, however, neither surprising nor out of the ordinary.

What Amanda Norgaard McBride, a 29-year old woman from Minnesota did however beats all the findings of the aforementioned study: she gave birth, while driving to a hospital.

It all went down on Highway 2 near Bagley, Minnesota. In a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt, Amanda and Joseph Phillips were heading to the North Country Regional Hospital hospital, where the woman was expected to give birth. On route, her water broke.

Amanda said she didn't pull over because she was afraid an ambulance would take too long to reach them, so she decided to put the car on cruise control, took down her pants, lifted her legs onto the seat, did a bit of Lamaze breathing and gave birth to an 8 pounds, 18.5 inches boy "with a full head of dark hair," as bemidjipioneer.com called him.

“I asked if she wanted to pull over, but she thought she could make it to the hospital before the baby arrive,." Phillips said was quoted as saying by the source. "She yelled at me to grab the wheel. And then, all of a sudden, I heard this little waaa..."

“I was more freaked out than she was,” Phillips continued. “She was cool-headed. I’ve always called her my super trooper.”

“And then the baby just came right out,” Amanda said about the experienced. “I was just sitting on the seat and he just slid out. It really wasn’t bad at all.”

Some of you might think the woman should be punished for giving birth while doing 70 on the highway. But because the car in which this all went down was on cruise control, we doubt anything can be done.

According to The New York Times, GM was so proud their Chevy Cobalt assisted the delivery, it decided to give the couple a prize: two child safety seats, a stroller and a year’s supply of diapers.
