A driver with a heart of gold got more than she bargained for when she forgot to put her car in park after she’d pulled over on the bank of the river, and her SUV rolled into the water.
All to save a turtle. As the Channel3000 video report available at the bottom of the page will confirm, the woman – whose identity has not been disclosed to the media – was on the bank of Rock River in Janesville, Wisconsin, trying to release a turtle into the water.

She got out of the car with the turtle in hand and approached the water, but was stopped in her rescue mission by the sight of the vehicle rolling into the water. Kevin Mageland was driving by in his motorcycle and he tells the media outlet that he saw the SUV floating past him.

His first reaction was to call the police, followed by his attempt to rescue anyone who might have been inside. Luckily, both the woman and the turtle were safe on solid ground. No one was injured, but the entire rescue operation cost the Janesville Police and Fire and the Department of Public Work a lot of time and effort, as they had to cut down trees to be able to take the vehicle out of the water.

Given the extended duration of the recovery operation and the fact that the SUV was submerged up to its roof, it’s probable it will have to be written off. Authorities also tell the media she lost her lunch as well, as she had placed it on the roof of the SUV.

Despite the woman’s considerate gesture, there is a lesson to be learned from her mishap, like how you should never park your car on steep inclines, especially if you have other, safer options. Most importantly, though, always make sure you put your car in park before getting out, especially if you’re parked on a steep incline.

Saving turtles may be amazing, but getting to enjoy the car that you have is even more so.
