This incident plays out like the punchline of a misogynist joke: one woman from China mistook the acceleration pedal for the brake and crashed the car she was driving into a dealership.
As it so happens, the car was a BMW X1, which sells for prices starting at $57,000 for the basic option. And the dealership she crashed into was also a BMW store. Luckily, she didn’t hit any other cars, but how’s that for an ironic twist?
The incident happened this past weekend in Guangzhou city, the Daily Mail says, citing reports in the local media. The woman had taken the car for a spin and was trying to park it outside, in the dealership parking lot, when she mistook one pedal for another and eventually lost control of the car. In short, she stepped on the acceleration instead of hitting the brake. We told you this could be a very good sexist joke.
CCTV footage made public shows the car ramming in through the glass doors, as customers and staff flee to safety. It’s clear that whoever is behind the wheel is having issues controlling the car, so it ends up smashing against a wall, in an explosion of glass and debris, as people look on in shock.
Local reports note that 2 people were injured in the strange accident, requesting treatment for minor injuries. The female driver and the salesperson, who was in the car in the passenger seat, were unhurt.
The woman accepted to take full responsibility for the accident, which probably means she will have to pay for the car and repairs, at least partially. Considering that she was solely responsible for what happened, she didn’t have any other choice, one would assume.
The insurance company covering the dealership is now working towards an estimate of the damages.
