Woman Breaks into Her Own Car, Bites Police Officer

Being a police officer is often a risky job, dealing with all sorts of criminals and not knowing the next thing you’ll face.One of the most weird things that happened to a Brisbane police officer was that he got bitten by a woman as he tried to arrest her for breaking into her own car.

Jennifer Elizabeth Somers, 30, pleaded guilty today to one count of serious assault, two counts of obstructing police and one count of public nuisance in the Brisbane District Court, news.com.au reported.

The incident happened two years ago, on a Sunday morning, when heavily intoxicated Ms. Somers was looking through her unlocked car for cigarettes. Two police officers, Peter Lashford and Wendy Poon, responded to a call that a woman had broken into a car in the area.

At first, the woman did not cooperate and even got verbally aggressive with the officers, but after a short while she gave them her full name, claiming that she owns the car. However, she was not able to show any identification document.

Ms Somers resisted the arrest and bit Lashford on the biceps when he placed her in a headlock. Defence lawyer Harry Fong said Const Lashford then shouted out "I've been bitten, the b$%^& has bitten me". The officer wrote in his victim impact statement to the court the bite had drawn blood. The doctors however, said the skin had not been broken.

The Judge said that while the police officers involved could have handled the situation better, they had a tough job and deserved the support of the court. When sentencing Ms. Somers, he mentioned her criminal history, which contained several police obstruction and assault offenses in 2002 and 2004. Ms. Somers was supposed to go to jail for four months, but she was immediately released on parole.
