WLTP Gets Stricter in September, Volkswagen Explains How

On September 1, 2019, even stricter emissions' rules come into effect in Europe. Officially, the new standard is pompously called Euro 6d TEMP EVAP ISC and its implementation will force carmakers to devise new technologies to bring their emissions down.
The standard is an expansion of the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure, or WLTP that is currently the agreed testing for all new cars in Europe. Euro 6d TEMP EVAP ISC will make WLTP even stricter that its initial version introduced in September 2018.

In Europe, current emission tests are comprised of the said WLTP and the Real Driving Emissions (RDE) procedure that complements it. But these tests are meant only for new cars.

From this fall, the results of these two types of procedures will be complemented with the introduction of the evaporative emissions tests (EVAP) that will measure the amount of fuel vapors being released into the environment.

One of the biggest changes however is the introduction of a rating for customer operation up to a mileage of 100,000 km (62,000 miles). Called InServiceConformity test (ISC) will be carried out on selected vehicles that have reached this threshold.

Europe's offensive meant to make cars cleaner will continue in the years ahead. After the introduction of the new standard this September, a bunch of others is planned in the coming years.

Volkswagen, the name that was at the center of the biggest emissions-related scandal in the auto industry possibly ever, released this week a video showing just how it prepares its cars for the future standard.

A good thing, considering that when WLTP came into force last year Volkswagen's sales dropped because its cars weren't ready to meet the new standards.

You can watch the video, which does a pretty good job at explaining the Euro 6d TEMP EVAP ISC, in the section below.
