Starting from this year, winter tires will no longer be mandatory in Belgium, as recently announced by Melchior Wathelet, the country’s mobility secretary of state.
There are multiple reasons that led to the authorities’ decision. It seems that a recently study perfected by the Institute for Road Safety revealed that only two percent of the crashes in Belgium ocur due to improper tires being used on snow.

What’s more, 90 percent of the trucks switch to winter tires starting from autumns, thanks to the the safe-aware drivers and company owners. It’s been determined that most trucks get stuck due to improper load repartition rather than due to the use of incorrect tires.

Thus, the Belgian authorities have rendered the winter tire regulations obsolete, focusing on defensive driving campaigns instead.

Nevertheless, Wathelet and insurance company Ethias want to offer drivers an insurance bonus if they fit their cars with snow tires, in order to still encourage them to do so.
