Wind Split Is a 330 HP Volkswagen T1 Barn-Door Van

Two days ago we were showing you the quickest Volkswagen badged vehicle on the planet, a Type 2 pickup that was transformed into a top fuel dragster, and since you guys liked that, here’s another one following almost the same recipe, minus the high-octane-fed supercharged elephant V8. We stumbled across this 1967 VW Transporter T1 High Top that cranks six times the power it had back in the day.

According to the video’s description, the Transporter T1 High Top here is driven by Pascal Amodru and the footage was taken last year at an Italian drag racing event on the Rivanazzano Dragway, that was specially held for American and aircooled Volkswagen cars.

However, unlike the crazy pickup project that took 10 years to build, this still uses most components of the old van and it’s not just a shell on top of a custom built tubular frame with a huge engine mounted behind the driver’s seat. This has a proper interior which also looks nice and seems comfortable for a longer trip.

Speaking about the engine, the original 1.5-liter flat-four that made around 50 hp has been replaced with a bigger, bored 2.3-liter one from the next generation. In standard shape, that was pushing a maximum of 71 hp, but through the magic of cylinder drilling and racing components it now turns at 230 hp. But, the guy also mounted a nitrous oxide system and the power goes up to 330 when the spray kicks in.

Check it out below and say if it isn’t hilarious hearing it scream like that stinger exhaust.
