The Grove based team's agreement with Toyota doesn't seem to have a very long future ahead for at least two reasons. First of all, the Japanese manufacturer is continuously linked with a future departure from the sport and secondly, the Toyota's V8s are regarded as the poorest units on the market in F1.
Although engine development has been frozen by the FIA for quite some time now, it seems Toyota have done a terrible job at maximizing their efforts in areas that the ruling body does permit some work. The Japanese car maker is currently the only manufacturer in F1 not to have scored a win in the series.
Although Frank Williams has been seen in the Mercedes garage during the DTM round at Brands Hatch – two weekends ago – Head insisted no deal with the German manufacturer was ever considered by the British team. As for Renault, however, the Williams' official admitted the French manufacturer was regarded as one of the options for an engine partnership, but the latest crash-gate scandal “certainly doesn't make it easier,” as confirmed by Head for the Dutch formule1.nl website.
With Ferrari certainly out of the question, Williams' only chance of making an engine-supplying switch in the series goes to British engine manufacturer Cosworth, which Head referred to as "an option" for the Stuttgartern Rosen. The two companies last worked together in 2006, Cosworth's last season in F1.
Until now, Campos Grand Prix, Manor Grand Prix and US GPE have all decided to use Cosworth power plants for the upcoming season, while the FIA's latest F1 entry Lotus F1 Team also confirmed its partnership with the British engine manufacturer earlier today.
