A while back we wrote about a 635 HP BMW M7. Unfortunately it was just a rendering, an game of theimagination, to see just how good an M7 would look.
For as long as the Audi S8 existed every BMW 7 Series enthusiasts dreamed about an M division rival to blow the S model out of the water. Unfortunately, we never got such a car and it seems like we might never get it.
The release of the amazing M6 Gran Coupe might be the coffin nail of any M7 possible project. Why is that? Well the Gran Coupe is a big 4-door sports saloon that carries the M badge.
Furthermore, the guys from autoblog are convinced that the M7 is doomed because of the Gran Coupe M6. We tend to think otherwise. If an M 7er will never see the light of day it won't be because of this 4-door coupe, but rather because of the 760Li versions but we digress.
Why is that? Well, first of all, the M6 GC is a rival for the RS7 and the CLS63 AMG and it makes more sense in this segment. All of them are 4-door coupes and have relatively the same sizes.
Second, the S8 is facing some pretty steep competition from the 760Li already. It's true, the Bimmer doesn't have the world's most powerful letter on its boot, but with a 6-liter V12 engine, 542 HP and 750 Nm (550 lb-ft) of torque, it's hard to say the 7er lacks power.
The rival from Audi, the S8, has a twin turbo 4-liter V8 unit with 520 HP and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque so it's already less powerful than the Bimmer. Why would the Bavarian company need a more powerful and agile car?
Well, for one reason, there's the Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG, a beast with a 6-liter V12 engine under its bonnet that produces 630 HP and 738 lb-ft (1001 Nm) of torque. This car is over the 760Li for the moment and it has to be neutralized.
That's where the M division has to step in. The future G11 model might bring the M7 out of the shadows, especially since it will be released somewhere around the company's 100th anniversary.
The new car should have more than 630 HP which is completely doable with the 6-liter V12 engine, especially if the Motorsport engineers get involved. Since the new car will also be lighter due to extensive usage of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer, it should easily overtake the S65 AMG.
That being said, the M6 Gran Coupe is definitely not a replacement for a possible M7. However, if we'll ever see such a car is a big question mark and it will all depend on the new S-Class from Mercedes Benz and the continuous feud with the S8. Let's keep our fingers crossed!
