Will Someone Please Make More Transparent Fuel Tanks?

Transparent objects have been quite popular at times, and the accelerated development of plastic types in the 60’s and 70’s has provided designers with constructive resources to put some of their wacky ideas in practice. From cool, functional items to ridiculous one, such as the transparent photo camera idea, everything goes. Still a transparent motorcycle fuel tank is one stunning idea.

Of course, the idea is not new, as (at least) Honda apparently filed for a transparent fuel tank patent back in 2005, but it looks like such a fuel storage solution comes with certain drawbacks, and heat buildup may be one of them.

The shape of the tank might act like a lens and concentrate the solar light on the fuel it contains, leading to heat build-up and excessive fuel vaporization, which might pose a safety hazard. At the same time, sunlight may have a negative impact on the quality of the fuel, as well. And another issue might be the need to constantly clean the interior of the tank, as petrol will leave the usual sediments and that would simply ruin the cool look.

However, seeing chopper loaded with a transparent fuel tank is as cool as it gets, and not only because of the functional aspect of being able to ditch and fuel gauges form the build and still know how much gas you’ve got left. To me, this looks like an awesome complement to any custom-crafted cruiser, in a way bringing onlookers closer to what motorcycling is.
