Will Smith and His Porsche 911 Are Back in Bad Boys for Life Trailer

Almost 16 years since their last outing, detective duo Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett have copped another case. This may be their last together, but the first trailer for “Bad Boys for Life” promises it will be one to remember.

Leading men Will Smith and Martin Lawrence have struggled to get the third installment in the “Bad Boys” franchise off the ground for years, even after original director Michael Bay said he would most likely not return to direct because no studio could afford his and Smith’s salary on a single budget. After several rewrites, directors, and missed release dates, “Bad Boys for Life” is finally on the right track.

And we have the first trailer, which marks the glorious return of Porsche 911, the car Smith’s character drove throughout the first, 1995 film. This time, it’s in a superb shade of blue: a 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, which is a solid tribute to the original 911 Turbo in the first film. Word has it that the OG 911 actually belonged to director Michael Bay.

Based on the trailer alone, “Bad Boys for Life” doesn’t seem to aim to reinvent the wheel. Instead, it uses the same tried-out recipe of solid action scenes / car crashes / explosions mixed with plenty of banter and humor, to deliver a movie that fans have been asking for for far too long. It might not have the same budget as the 2003 release, which took everything overboard because it could afford to, but it’s still very promising.

Marcus still dings his partner’s sweet rides because he’s clumsy, the captain still drinks antacid by the bottle because Lowrey can’t keep his gun holstered (and no, this isn’t an euphemism), cars crash and explode, Lowrey always puts his jackets on in slow-mo, and there’s a chase involving a motorcycle sidecar fitted with a machine gun, which Lowrey rides while wearing a Versace jacket. If this isn’t the essence of Bad Boys, we don’t know what is.

Directed by relative newcomers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, “Bad Boys for Life” also stars Alexander Ludwig, Vanessa Hudgens and Charles Melton, who sing the original Bad Boys theme while cleaning out their guns. It’s all very meta. The film will be out in January 2020.
