Wiesmann Factory Closed: Employees Quit and Repairs Are no Longer Possible

If a shed-built supercar maker suddenly announces it's bankrupt, we rarely bat an eye. However, news coming from Wiesmann's factory in Dulmen, located near the border with the Netherlands, has us worried that one of the most ambitious and amazing sportscar makers could be coming to an end.

Of the 125 employees who worked in Dulmen, only 6 remain and even those will leave later this year. The assembly facilities are silent and even repair and/or regular maintenance is no longer carried out there.

Most owners are going to BMW dealerships, who are capable of taking care of the major mechanical parts, like the engines and gearboxes. One Dutch dealership called Hoefa announced it's still in business and will continue to carry our service work for now.

"There is simply no money . There have been investor calls. But the money is just not there. We therefore do not know what is really going to happen , "said one of the employees of Wiesmann.

The company's troubles started in 2009, just as the major economic crisis hit. Wiesmann's ambition to expand their factory at the cost of several million euros also proved an ill-timed move.

Now the company is unable to pay no only its workers, but also several bills with parts suppliers. A few months ago, rumors of investors being interested in the company circulated on the internet, but it seems the needed capital never came, despite a solid reputation and a loyal fanbase.

If nothing good happens, we will still remember Wiesmann for cars like the GT MF5, a monster that's as light of a feather and the twin-turbo engine of an M5.
