Widebody Volvo V60 Polestar Looks Like the RS4 Rival We Will Never Get

Here's a little secret we want to share with you. Volvo as a whole is a cool brand, but we don't love the V60, which is strange considering most car journalists slobber over anything shaped like a wagon.

Depending on where you live, the V60 can be more expensive than an A4 Avant or 3 Series Touring. We don't want to argue about the merits of one over the other here. There's plenty of reasons to want a Volvo over a German car, ours being the seats, for example. However, about the only appeal these old-fashioned premium cars retain is performance and heritage.

The V60 has kind of lost both. Thanks to a little thing called the Polestar brand, we got some interesting performance flavors for the last generation. However, when the Polestar V60 switched from an H6 engine to a four-cylinder, making it clear that Volvo wasn't about to chase after the BMW M3 or Audi RS4.

This wasn't always the case. Back in the old days, the Swedish automaker went to every race it could and developed interesting high-displacement engines, one of which got put into a hypercar.

We get what they're doing now; subscription services and ultra-safe transportation are the way to go when it comes to the mass market. However, Volvo fans still want a spark of fire, they want another Polestar V60.

The RS6 Avant that came to Los Angeles last week proved there's nothing sexier than a widebody wagon. The way the fenders stick further out than the doors is just epic. Even the smaller RS4, which America doesn't get to enjoy, is a cool machine. And while people don't respect its slightly downsized (from the previous generation) V6, that 450 horsepower twin-turbo is still way more enjoyable than anything Volvo makes.

Admittedly, the T8 plug-in hybrid engine has some grunt, but we would have liked to see some six-cylinder units available, especially on the larger XC90 SUV that faces competition almost exclusively powered by more pistons.

Still, one can still dream, and that's made a little easier by this realistic-looking widebody V60 by Berlin 3D artist Andreas Richter.
