This isn’t necessarily the first time when McLaren lets it slip that its badge will never be found on an SUV, but the company has recently made a deliciously bold point on the matter.
Mike Flewitt, McLaren’s CEO, told Bloomberg that the company wants to be as focused as possible, so including an SUV in its line-up is definitely on the list of things that will not happen. Nonetheless, the manner in which the CEO expressed the idea is the focus here.
“We genuinely believe we make the best sports cars in the world,” Mike Flewitt, chief executive officer of McLaren, said in an interview in Shanghai yesterday. “We need to remain very focused. McLaren is a sports car brand and that’s exactly what we’re going to remain.”
The aforementioned talk comes after various unofficial sources stated McLaren could follow Lamborghini’s example and offer an SUV. We shall remind you that Lamborghini has confirmed the Urus will be launched in the course of 2018.
If a superficial view is used, it may seem like an SUV would make sense for the Surrey-based automaker, but this is far from the truth. Yes, the Cayenne may have financially rescued Porsche and yes Lamborghini and Bentley may now be ready for the SUV game, but none of this would help McLaren. First of all, its image would be affected. Secondly, McLaren’s is still a small company and an SUV project would requite a monster investment. A massive bet that would be way past the acceptable risk border.
