Why Doesn't Audi Make an RS5 Sportback?

In recent years, Audi has been quite… liberal with the use of the "Sportback" name. You have the A3 Sportback, which is just a regular hatchback, the RS4 Sportback, which is an uber-fast V8-powered wagon and the A7 Sportback, which is a sexy, long four-door coupe.

Somewhere in between all these cars, Audi has snuck in the A5 Sporback, which is supposed to be a compact executive four-door coupe, but is often confused for an A4 sedan.

Most of you have probably noticed there's no RS4 sedan any more. Ingolstadt, in their wisdom, have decided people who want a sexy sedan actually want the RS5 coupe. Since they've bluntly refused to make an uber-sedan, why not offer the RS5 as a Sportback instead.

The RS5 range already includes a coupe and convertible, buy the four-door is only available as an S5 with 333 hp coming from a 3.0 TFSI V6 engine. Sure, you can tune that to look and perform like a real RS, but you can't put launch control on it, which makes a world off difference.

If the first M3 model BMW will launch next year is the sedan, than surely Audi is making a mistake. What do you guys think?
