Why an Alfa Romeo-Sourced Platform Is Good News for Jeep's 2021 Grand Cherokee L

One of the most anticipated full-size SUVs of 2021, the redesigned Grand Cherokee L is built on a new architecture developed to deliver improved comfort, handling, fuel economy, and durability.

Recently revealed, the three-row version of Jeep’s acclaimed SUV is based on the Giorgio platform initially developed for the Giulia and Stelvio.

Yes, you read that right, the mid-size SUV has switched from the old Mercedes M-Class backbone to the latest Alfa Romeo architecture, which should undoubtedly improve handling dynamics.

This platform integrates lightweight, state-of-the-art materials that enable better weight distribution and improved torsional rigidity.

The solid-mounted front cradle, engine mounts, shock towers, and steering gear are all made from aluminum, while the cross-car beam is fabricated using magnesium.

For the first time on a Grand Cherokee, the front axle is bolted directly to the engine, which results in a lower center of gravity as well as less noise, vibration, and ruggedness. In addition, the enhanced engine box with a shock-to-shock tower brace improves local lateral stiffness by 125%, according to the carmaker.

To further improve smoothness, the SUV is equipped with electronic engine mounts that absorb more vibration and movement at idle than conventional rubber mounts yet stiffen up at higher speeds.

Moreover, the Grand Cherokee L uses an independent suspension system on both the front and rear axles. Out back, the multi-link layout should contribute to an improvement in comfort and handling.

The vehicle’s legendary off-road capability is complemented by a new variable-rate air spring suspension system that should also dramatically improve on-road comfort.

Models equipped with this air suspension system use a set of electrically controlled, semi-active shocks that continuously adjust to road conditions and driving styles.

To change ride height almost instantly, the Quick Down Leveling (QDL) feature uses an external valve block and an additional air reservoir, allowing for both axles to go down simultaneously, compared with single axle lowering systems used in previous generations. Another improvement is the closed-loop air system that recycles clean air, extending the lifespan of the compressor.

The superior driving experience that we should expect from the new Grand Cherokee is also supplemented by the carefully calibrated electric power steering (EPS) system. The integrated motor works with an adaptive engine control unit (ECU) to monitor steering speed, steering wheel angle, and vehicle speed.

The resulting variable-rate ratio enables the big SUV to be easily maneuvered at low speeds, with the steering feedback being light and comfortable. At high speeds, the system will stiffen, and the steering ratio will be reduced to enhance stability.

Power won’t come from an Alfa Romeo-tuned engine since the SUV will be delivered as standard with a 290-hp Pentastar V6. Still, for those who want more, Jeep will also offer a 357-hp 5.7-liter HEMI V8. Each engine works with the sturdy TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic.

Now, although the 2021 Grand Cherokee L offers a decent amount of power and is built on the sporty Giorgio platform, it won’t handle exactly like the Stelvio as it's still a massive three-row SUV.

However, all these improvements will undoubtedly result in better driving dynamics compared to previous Grand Cherokee generations and maybe future Trackhawk performance versions will get closer in terms of handling to their Italian sibling.
