White House to Buy 100 Wheego LiFe Electric Cars

It appears that back in March, US President Barack Obama stated the White House will purchase the first 100 plug-in electric vehicles to roll off American assembly lines before the end of the year, while revealing his energy policy plans. While everybody was expecting the vehicles in question to be Chevrolet Volts, it appears they will be replaced by Wheego electric cars.

According to Wheego, the company plans to launch its LiFe plug-in electric vehicles one month before the Volt and two months before the Nissan Leaf hit the US market, AutoNews reports.

"He [Obama] was probably assuming they would be Chevy Volts, but they will be Wheego LiFes. We've contacted the White House to make sure they know," CEO Mike McQuary was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source.

"We've been operating under the radar screen rather than making a lot of media noise,"
said McQuary, "But we've got dealers standing by and expect to have the Wheego LiFe on sale in October."

A decision from the White House is yet to be made, but Wheego has its hopes high and dreams of selling more than just 100 units of the LiFe. "It would be quite a coup having the president come to our shop in California, having the national media see the White House buy our cars," continued McQuary.

It appears the company has already alerted the White House on its plans of launching the LiFe as the first plug-in electric vehicles to hit the US market, but the response was disappointing for the Atlanta-based automaker. "They told us they've never heard of us," the Wheego executive said.

Available in red, white, blue, black, silver or green with a gray interior, the 2011 Wheego LiFe has an approximate range of 100 miles (161 km), a top speed of 65 mph (105 km/h). The electric vehicle is priced at $32,995 - before the $7,500 federal tax credit.
