Whipple Supercharger for S197 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Priced at $6,200

After rolling out blowers for the Silverado’s small-block V8s and the Godzilla V8 in the Super Duty, Whipple Superchargers is much obliged to improve the output ratings of the Shelby GT500. Not the current gen with the Predator V8 but the previous model with the 5.4- and 5.8-liter lumps.

Priced at $6,200 and finished in a semi-gloss textured black as standard, the blower comes with two options for the air inlet. Namely, the 123-millimeter cold air intake for 2007 to 2009 models or 2010 to 2014 models. An elliptical throttle body is also included but bear in mind you need two optional extra.

Whipple highlights on its website that the supercharger “will not fit under the factory hood without the K-member spacer kit and the adjustable motor mounts.” Those two cost $350 and $180 for a grand total of $530 over the starting price of $6,200. Ford Textured Blue, Gloss White, and Stage 2 polished finishes are all listed at $600. So, what about the performance?

The 3.8-liter Gen 5 Whipple supercharger “can produce incredible power levels well into the 2000-HP range in race applications,” and as expected, the emphasis falls on the last two words. Clearly not emissions legal, the roots-type blower "may be used solely on vehicles used in sanctioned competition."

On the upside, the supercharger is a direct bolt-on replacement for the bone-stock blower in the S197 Shelby GT500. Designed to lower discharge temperatures in order to reduce power consumption, the 3.8-liter system fits under Supersnake hoods but you still have to use adjustable engine mounts.

As a brief refresher, the 2007 model year is rated at 500 horsepower (507 PS) and 480 pound-feet (651 Nm) right out of the box. The next version of the 5.4-liter blunderbuss leveled up to 550 horsepower and 510 pound-feet (558 PS and 691 Nm) while the 5.8 “Trinity” in the 2013 and 2014 models delivers 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet (671 PS and 856 Nm) of oomph.

The Predator V8 in the all-new Shelby GT500, however, is the most potent engine the Ford Motor Company ever put in a production car. Yes, it's even more powerful than the high-output EcoBoost V6 in the GT supercar!
