The Alfa 4C Spider is one of our favorite cars from this year's Detroit Auto Show. It's bold, it's fast and it's very Italian. But the Ferrari 458 Italia's half brother is not to be taken seriously.
While reading though the endless press release about the new model, there was a nagging voice in the back of our head telling us there's something wrong with the design. We couldn't see it at first, but now we can: the sportscar looks just like Pikachu.
We didn't notice this before because this specific color combination is new. The Giallo Yellow is fresh and the carbon fiber mirrors that look like Pika's black ears are are part of a track package. The cherry on the cake are the US-spec orange reflectors, which remind you of Pikachu's blushing cheeks.
They often say that German car designers have no sense of humor, but it seems their Italian counterparts don't like Japanese cartoons. At any point in the design process, any Alfa designer could have taken a step back and realized the Spider now looks like the most famous Pokemon in the world, but that didn't happen.
This isn't the first time we noticed cartoon design influences. For example, the Hazumi concept which Mazda used to preview the 2 supermini resembled the red bird from Angry Birds.
