BMW and GoPro joined efforts in integrating the BMW M Laptimer and the video recording technologies, a real boon for the passionate drivers that take their cars to the track often. We wonder if BMW is also eyeing delivering such an application for their S1000RR machines...
The BMW M Laptimer is a complex application that allows drivers to control a GoPro camera using an iOS device. The drivers also enjoy the benefits the iDrive controller and the high-res display offer, but there is room for porting this technology aboard superbikes as well. Obviously, minus the screen.

Basically, when a driver is using the M Laptimer, the onboard GoPro starts shooting video. A lower-resolution copy of that video is also stored on the iPhone, and it can be watched alongside a map of the track.

The new M Laptimer version is scheduled for this summer and will include a GoPro menu. Users will thus have access to the name of the connected camera, a live preview, camera angle adjustment, WiFi signal strength, and power saving features.

BMW developed this application for closed-course operation solely, but considering that the S1000RR is often taken to the race track, we'd guess that riders could also make use of this technology.

Most modern liter-class (and above) sport bikes come loaded with race-derived and race-ready features that include lap timing and even GPS tracking around the track.

The bike-focused Laptimer could replace the car's high-res screen with the iPhone display, so that riders can set up their camera. Even more, the M Laptimer comes with no less than six quick-load modes, such as Leisure Drive Facing Out, Night Driving, Sport Drive Facing Out, Drive Camera Facing In, Winding Road Time-lapse, and Straight Road Time-lapse.

Basically, the S1000RR could receive a smaller, less complex version of the M Laptimer app, adapted for a rider's needs and bike particularities, offered as an extra racing-minded package for track enthusiasts. Wonder what S1000RR riders have to say about this...
