Wet Weather to Affect Australian Grand Prix

Mixed weather is likely to welcome the Formula 1 caravan in Melbourne this weekend, for the season opening round of the 2011 championship, the Australian Grand Prix.

According to the weather forecast for the rest of the week, some showers are expected to hit the Albert Park region on Tuesday afternoon, while likely to return later in the week for Thursday and possibly even Friday.

That means the practice sessions in Day 1 might be affected by rain, which would make Pirelli's extra set of hard tires useless in the teams' attempt to figure out a competitive set-up for the crucial qualifying on Saturday.

It's pretty clear we'll have some mixed weather this weekend, so we might not get a real understanding of who's where,” argued Aussie star Mark Webber, who has already issued some weather-related warnings for the Melbourne event last week.

However, if rain is to affect the Friday running at Albert Park, Saturday and Sunday are currently not in the same situation. However, the hot weather that used to welcome the F1 field each year Down Under is history now, as temperatures over the course of the upcoming weekend are likely to remain in the low 20s.

Last year's Australian Grand Prix was also affected by rain, but it then happened during the Sunday running. It provided the F1 pack with the first wet race of the season, eventually won for the second time in a row by Jenson Button.
