Being in the wrong place at the wrong time is not something we can control, but what we can do (to some extent, usually dictated by our financial potency) is to make sure that when the worst is about to happen, at least, we’ll be sitting in one of the safest cars on the road.
The BMW i8 hasn’t been tested by none of the major organizations devoted to this type of classifications - the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety or their European equivalent, the EuroNCAP. Now, though, we have found out the hard way that it can withstand a large cement truck toppling over on top of it.

On Thursday morning, a cement truck hit a garden truck under undisclosed circumstances near the 73 freeway offramp and Newport Coast Drive. Surprisingly, the much bigger vehicle was the one that tipped over following the impact, dragging a third car - the blue BMW i8 plug-in hybrid - into the accident.

Three people have been taken to hospital as a result of this incident, with one initially in critical condition while the other two suffered life-threatening injuries. Orange County Fire Authority Captain Larry Kurtz said that a 50-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman were taken to Mission Hospital with moderate traumatic injuries, while the 50-year-old man with more severe injuries has been brought to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana.

The report from The Orange County Register doesn’t state the vehicles these three injured people were in, nor does it make it clear who was at fault or what exactly happened. Since the collision took place at around 8:42 in the morning, the traffic was pretty heavy so about 50 cars were forced to extend their morning commute before the authorities closed down the road to allow the paramedics to focus on the victims. Six hours later, traffic was still blocked despite the efforts of both New Port and Irvine authorities, since streets in both cities were affected.
