Webber Sends Apology Email to Hamilton

Mark Webber once again proved to be a true gentleman – continuing the legacy of DC at Red Bull – and apologized to reigning Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton for “clipping the back” of his McLaren MP4-24 in the first corner of the German Grand Prix.

Although he won the race in a dominant manner, Webber did not benefit from such a great start from pole position last Sunday. He was overtaken by both Rubens Barrichello and Hamilton's KERS-powered MP4-24 by the first corner, only the Brit ran wide on the outside and rejoined the track in 3rd place.

His car suffered a puncture in the process, which caused Hamilton to slow down throughout the first lap and enter the pit for a new set of tires. The incident eventually ruined the race for the McLaren driver, whose car looked like a podium contender all weekend at the Nurburgring.

Webber's more obvious bump, into Brawn GP's Barrichello, later enforced a drive-through penalty from the race stewards to the Red Bull Aussie.

Mercedes' motorsport director Norbert Haug revealed Webber sent the Woking based team an apology email, in which he states his more was not intentional. While admitting the Red Bull were untouchable in Germany, Haug insisted Hamilton had a great shot at the podium hadn't it been for the aforementioned incident.

After the race Mark sent us an email to apologise and to say that it was not intentional. I would like to say very clearly that we would not have beaten Red Bull, but I think a third place would have been possible,” Haug was quoted as saying to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport.
