Webber Handed FIA Penalty for Taking Out Hamilton

The race at Albert Park over the weekend was probably one of the most spectacular in years – since the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix, we'd say – mainly due to the fact that there have been so many overtaking maneuvers through the 58 laps of action. With two laps to go, Lewis Hamilton tried his luck on passing Alonso, but the rear of his car was tipped by Mark Webber's RB6 and both cars were sent into the gravel.

After the race, Webber admitted that he at least “went down fighting” and apologized to Hamilton after the race.

Lewis and I both caught Fernando. I was looking forward to the last part of the race, thought it would be a good fight. We both got a run on Fernando. I apologized to Lewis,” said Webber, who was looking to score his first podium in his home race.

Webber then made a visit to the racing stewards to explain his actions in the late stages of the race, and admitted his mistake. According to Autosport, the Australian driver was informed that he will be handed a reprimand for his maneuver, although this is yet to be known. As past such experiences have taught us, the 33-year old is probably looking at a grid penalty for the upcoming Malaysian Grand Prix.

Despite his “victim” status on Sunday, Hamilton did not issue any comments on Webber's maneuver, as he was far more angry with his team's pit strategy for the Sunday race. From the leading pack, he was the only driver committing to a 2-pit stop strategy, which eventually cost him a potential win. His frustration burst even before the chequered flag was waved, as he told his team via radio, some 4 laps to go, that pitting for the second time was “the worst decision.”
