Weathered Mercedes-Benz W196 Monoposto Scale Model Costs as Much as a Real Car

Amalgam Collection is to the scale model world what fine makers like Richard Mille are to the timekeeping industry. A true creator of “masterpieces of model-making art with enduring value,” the brand has given us another measure of its expertise in the form of its latest race weathered scale model project.

This time around, we’re dealing with a handcrafted limited edition of just five examples of the Mercedes-Benz W196 Monoposto. This racer was guided by Sir Stirling Moss back in 1955 towards his first Formula One victory at that year’s British Grand Prix. Now, each of the scale model replicas is also accompanied by a Giclée print of the real car – captured at the exact moment of crossing the finish line.

According to Amalgam, the race weathering that was applied by the company’s Bristol craftsmen “exactly represents the #12 car as it reached the chequered flag.” Naturally, the W196 Monoposto – even though it’s a scale model – doesn't come too cheap, as it can be had for exactly $17,155.

That’s about the price of an affordable new car – one that isn’t scaled down, mind you. For example, the Chevrolet Sonic can be had from $16,720. Or, in case you don’t need its sedan abilities, you could go for a 2021 Ford EcoSport by adding just a few more greenbacks to reach the $19,995 asking price.

Granted, none of them will bring the attention to detail invested by Amalgam Collection into the new weathered project, nor the collector’s value of having one of just five examples of the 1:8 scale model. Well, at least you get to sit behind the wheel of those vehicles and drive them around.

Back to the Mercedes-Benz W196, it speaks of the incredible experience the real Monoposto provided to the audience of the 1955 British Grand Prix. The German automaker was blatantly dominating the world of Formula One even then, as Moss led a pack of W196 examples that snatched first, second, third, and fourth places at Aintree, the UK, in July of 1955.
